I took this opportunity to write about one of my favorite artists, Marina Abramović. As the self-proclaimed “grandmother of performance art”, I find her message and methods to be conceptual and engaging. I first discovered her work shortly after graduating from college, when I coincidentally viewed her retrospective at MoMA by chance. Among her many powerful performances, “Rhythm 0” and “The Great Wall Walk” remain my personal favorites.
To deepen my understanding of Abramović’s life and practice, I explored numerous articles and interviews, and gathered high-resolution images of her performances. Using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, I designed front and back cover drafts. After selecting one front cover design—one I hope Abramović herself might appreciate—I used it as the foundation and inspiration for the interior spreads of my magazine, Design Through the Decades.
The finished piece is a nine-spread publication that covers the life and career of Marina Abramović. My hope is that readers not only enjoy learning about her journey, but that fellow artists are inspired to approach their own work with a deeper sense of conceptual curiosity and courage.
